Novell announced the availability of Novell® ZENworks® 6.5, which allows
organizations to consolidate the management of their IT resources and reduce the
costs of managing their environment throughout the entire business lifecycle of
desktops, laptops, servers and handhelds.
Novell ZENworks 6.5 now includes ZENworks Linux* Management (formerly Ximian®
Red Carpet Enterprise™) to provide secure, scalable and centralized management
of SUSE® LINUX and Red Hat Linux server and desktop systems.
A special edition of InstallShield's AdminStudio* provides automation of
software packaging, customization and quality assurance to ensure reliable
applications for enterprise use. The AdminStudio ZENworks Edition distribution
wizard tightly integrates with ZENworks to automatically create application
objects for easy distribution of software packages.
Apparently this means that Novell has ended their partnership
(http://www.novell.com/partnerguide/p100116.html) which they had with Wise
Solutions (http://www.wise.com/press.asp?PressID=55) and instead are now
cooperating with InstallShield. This comes as no suprise since Wise is now owned
by Altiris, a direct competitor to Novell.

The book "The Definitive Guide to Windows Installer" by Phil Wilson is now

shipping in Europe).
It is an introduction to MSI technology and includes some practical tips. It's
primarily using Visual Studio .NET and Orca as tools.

Caphyon LLC released a new version of their Windows Installer authoring tool AdvancedInstaller. Version 1.7 adds the ability to control in detail the organization of your Windows Installer package by creating and controlling features, selecting the components to be included in each feature and specifying attributes for both features and components. The new version also can recursively add registry keys and includes bugfixes.

Zero G Software, a leading provider of Java based multi platform installation tools, announced the availability of InstallAnywhere.NET. It creates MSI setups using Microsoft's Windows Installer technology. In December 2003 Zero G had acquired ActiveInstall and transformed the product into InstallAnywhere .NET. ActiveInstall was originally written by Michael Sanford, one of the Microsoft Windows Installer MVPs. Michael joined Zero G with the acquisition, but in the meantime has left the company.

The Ghost Installer product used to be created and sold by gInstall Corp., a
company based in Germany. Since around June 16 the URL http://www.ginstall.com
redirects to http://www.ethalone.com, the web site of US-based Ethalone
Solutions, Inc., who are now offering the product. There is very little
information about what has happended behind the scenes. It was also said that
the "People are partially new, and partially the same".
At the same time, Ethalone Solutions released the new version 4.0 of Ghost
Installer, however without MSI support, which had been announced for version 4.
Ethalone Solutions said that MSI support is now planned for version 5.0.
InstallShield has released Service Pack 1 for the English verison of InstallShield X. It fixes a couple of problems for MSI and InstallScript projects, no changes for Universal projects.
In addition to publishing the service pack via the Update Service (Tools >
Check for Updates) InstallShield is also making it available for direct
download:

An IBM-led group of companies has proposed a standard aimed at ironing out
configuration problems in the installation of applications on business networks.
The XML-based specification, known as the Solution Installation for Autonomic
Computing, was written by IBM, Novell, and installation software companies
InstallShield Software and Zero G Software. IBM said the group's submission of
the specification was accepted by the World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C,
Thursday.
The specification is an XML-based document format that defines the software
needed to run an application. When a developer writes the installation part of a
business program, he or she will be able to outline what other software is
required on the network. It is meant to prevent the configuration problems that
can occur when a company installs or updates a business application in complex
computing environments.
For example, an update to an insurance claims-processing application could
require specific versions of a Web server or a certain hardware server
configuration. Solution Installation tools can spot and sort out any problems
automatically, instead of leaving them to be dealt with by an administrator, IBM
said.

Macrovision® Corporation announced the public beta program for its new
product line, InstallShield for IBM Solution Installation. This new
functionality was developed in partnership between InstallShield and IBM to
provide a common approach to software packaging that will allow developers to
more efficiently deploy and maintain their applications across a wide variety of
platforms.
Zero G Introduces SolutionArchitect, Enabling a Dramatic Improvement in
Enterprise Software Deployment. SolutionArchitect is a software installation and
configuration solution for building ready-to-deploy software packages using the
new Solution Installation packaging standard.
