Some weeks ago I asked you whether you prefer to receive this newsletter in text or HTML format. The result of the poll was excatly 50% for each of the options. So I'll try to provide the newsletter in both formats. The text version will be delivered by e-mail to your inbox, with a link to the HTML version at the top of the mail. A new version of InstallShield's "classic" product line is available for beta testing. InstallShield Professional 7.0 is based on the same InstallScript technology as Professional 6.x, it's not using Windows Installer/MSI. Many enhancements that InstallShield 6 users requested have been added in the new version, for instance:
Projects created with Professional 6.3 should convert seemlessly to version 7.0. InstallShield evens offers a reward for failing projects (some restrictions and limitations apply). For details about the new version and to enroll in the beta test visit the InstalShield Professional 7 beta site. The final release of ISP 7 is expected mid August. It will be a paid upgrade.

InstallShield AdminStudio 3.5 is now available for beta testing. It has an improved Repackager based on InstallMonitor technology, a new conversion wizard for Novell ZENworks, Microsoft SMS and WinINSTALL files, enhanced Conflict Solver and more. It also includes the latest version of InstallShield Developer 7 (with service pack 4) as Author component. The beta program is open to current AdminStudio users and is expected to last about six weeks. To read the release notes and to enroll please visit the InstallShield AdminStudio 3.5 Beta site. The next version of InstallShield Developer is now available. The highlight of the new version is full integration in the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET development environment. A common interface can now be used for all development work, and installation projects are automatically updated as applications evolve. The stand alone IDE is also included so you can use Developer without Visual Studio. Service Pack 4 also improves .NET support and fixes some bugs. The German and Japanese editions are expected to follow a few weeks later. Service Pack 4 is available free of charge for users of Developer 7.0x. To obtain the new version select "Check for Updates" from the Tools menu.

Messages on the internet report that Microsoft will delay Service Pack 3 for Windows 2000 because of problems in the Windows Installer runtime version 2.0 that should be included in the service pack.
"Microsoft originally scheduled SP3 for release July 17, but the company recently
discovered several major bugs in the Microsoft Installer (MSI) 2.0 code, which the company
had planned to bundle with the update. Microsoft will remove MSI 2.0 from SP3 and will
instead include the older version, MSI 1.1, unless feedback from Microsoft beta testers
and partners indicates they want MSI 2.0 included. Obviously, this indecision will

Unfortunately no additional details about the problems in MSI 2.0 are available. Note that this isn't an official announcement from Microsoft - it's a rumor, so it may not be true. Remember that MSI 2.0 is available as redistributable (that can be installed on Windows 2000) since September 2001, and has been updated in February 2002.
InstallShield participates in Microsoft's Visual Studio Integration Program. The result is not only Developer 7.04 that can be fully integrated in the Visual Studio IDE, but also a limited time offer for a bundle of InstallShield Developer with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Professional. For a rather low extra price (between 112 EUR and 447 EUR, compared to the regular price of Developer) you get the Professional edition of Visual Studio .NET together with InstallShield Developer. There's even an option for existing Developer customers to get Visual Studio at a special rate.

GERMANFür ein längerfristiges Projekt in München wird ein InstallShield-Experte gesucht. Das Projekt soll zunächst auf Consulting-Basis durchgeführt werden, eine spätere Festanstellung bei der Firma ist möglich.
Die Aufgabenstellung besteht im Erstellen und Testen von Installationen, welche ausschlaggebend für die Akzeptanz des Produktes beim Kunden sind. Der Spezialist sollte über Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen mit InstallShield und Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen im Verwalten von SW-Modulen für das Konfigurieren von Produkten verfügen.
Der Mitarbeiter wird umgehend und längerfristig (mehrere Monate) in München benötigt, mit der Option einer eventuellen Festanstellung bei beiderseitigem Gefallen. Die finanziellen Konditionen werden sicher marktgerecht sein. Die Person muss also zumindest mittelfristig bereit sein, sich nach München hin verändern zu wollen.

Das Service Pack 3 für InstallShield Developer ist jetzt auch in Deutsch verfügbar. InstallShield Developer 7.03 enthält etliche Bugfixes und einige neue Funktionen. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt auf Erleichterungen für den Entwickler, z.B. durch den System Search View um Dateien und Registrierungseinträge auf dem Zielsystem zu finden (anstatt die AppSearch, RegLocator u.a. Tabellen von Hand ausfüllen zu müssen), ein Schalter um zwischen MSI Version 1.2 und 2.0 zu wechseln, automatisches Erstellen von Einträgen in der MsiFileHash Tabelle für versionslose Dateien (erforderlich, um Patches ohne Original-Medien zu installieren), die Möglichkeit, im Disk 1 Verzeichnis Unterverzeichnisse für zusätzliche Setup-Dateien anzugeben, usw. Das Service Pack ist für Anwender von ISD 7.0x kostenlos erhältlich. Es kann über das Menü "Extras" herunter geladen werden.
